Back in September I talked about Thomas Diamond when the Cubs picked him off of waivers. He was a former first round pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft. The Rangers gave up on him after having two surgeries including one to remove two bone spurs and Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. When the Cubs picked him up in September there was not much news on this waiver transaction. The other day there was a article on the Cubs website which talked more about him. The Cubs hope that now he is healthy he will live up to the promise he had a few years ago.
Thomas went to the University of New Orleans where his head coach was Randy Bush. Bush who was the head coach at the University of New Orleans from 2000-2004 is now the Cubs assistant general manager. Bush recruited him out of high school in New Orleans. Bush used to own some batting cages in New Orleans where he met Diamond. Bush even gave Diamond hitting lessons when he was 10 and 11. Those lessons obviously didn’t work out now that he is pitching, but it works out for the Cubs who always need pitching. Lets hope Thomas Diamond gets back on track now that he is healthy and be the pitcher that Bush thought he was several years ago.
