The past few days I have been seeing a lot of stories in the paper and segments on t.v. showing the best sport moments in the past year. So I thought I would share my favorite sport memory. I thought long and hard about the baseball season and the Cubs, but couldn’t think of many great memories. When I thought about the Cubs things that came to my mind were:
1. The Milton Bradley Saga
2. Kevin Gregg blowing save after save. One specific night comes into mind when I was at Champs with TBO and Sexy Rexy and the Cubs game was on. Gregg came in against his former team for the save and before I could blink the game was over and we lost.
3. Carlos Marmol getting himself in trouble by not being able to find the plate. He would walk batter after batter. I hope this whole off-season he is somewhere just pitching trying to get the ball with his movement over the plate.
4. Kerry Wood coming to Chicago and helping the Cubbies out by blowing some saves.
5. Soriano looking like age is catching up with him and his timing being a mess at the plate.
Hopefully the 2010 baseball season will bring me more positive memories for the cubs. I would have thought my best sports memory would be from the Cubs, but this was a bad and ugly season at times, so I had to think elsewhere. After the cubs I thought about the Bulls and Bears. The Bears had an uglier season than the Cubs, but the Bulls had some bright spots.
In 2009 the Chicago Bulls got lucky and had the number one draft pick in the NBA lottery. Instead of drafting Michael Beasley they choose Chicago native Derrick Rose. Even though I don’t know if he will ever be as good as Rajon Rondo or Chris Paul like some thought/think, he was the better choice. The Bulls were able to trade Larry Hughs and bring in John Salmons and Brad Miller that sparked the bulls. Even though it is still 2009 and they both look terrible, last season they were the spark plug that jumped the Bulls to make the playoffs and have an incredible run in the playoffs. So if you’re still reading this and a Bulls fan, then you may agree with me that the Bulls/Celtics series was incredible. That was some of the best basketball I have seen since the Jordan era and that was one incredibly fun series. Even though if they did have Kevin Garnet we probably wouldn’t of had a chance, but they didn’t, and that was some fun basketball with almost every game going down to the wire. So that series is my favorite sports memory in 2009.

Watching it again makes me remember how much fun I had watching each game and where I was for most of those games.

A Look at the Chicago Bulls 2009……….John Salmons
John Salmons played college basketball at the University of Miami in Florida and was drafted 26th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2002 NBA Draft. He was then immediately traded with Mark Bryant and rights to Randy Holcomb for Speedy Claxton to the Philadelphia 76ers where he played through the 2006 season. His best season with the Philadelphia 76ers was the 2005-2006 season where he averaged 7.5 PPG. Then he spent three years in Sacramento averaging 12.5 for the 2007-2008 season. Last season he spent 53 games with the Sacramento Kings averaging 18.3 points and then continued averaging 18.3 PPG seasons while with the Bulls.
Now Salmons will be starting at shooting guard with the Chicago Bulls. He will provide some offense and some much needed height in the backcourt being 6-6. Salmons shot the ball well last year and looks to finally being a steady scorer. Salmons averaged 18.3 PPG last season with the Bulls and will need to continue that with the Bulls. He doesn’t have a long history of being an effective shooter so the Bulls need him to continue what he started last season and help carry the offensive load for the bulls this season.

A Look at the Chicago Bulls 2009……….Shooting Guard
Ben Gordon departed as a free agent this past offseason and he was the heart and soul of this team’s offense. Ben Gordon starting or coming off the bench was the team’s best shooting guard arguably since Michael Jordan. The Bulls have a big hole to fill in Ben Gordon leaving after being the Bulls primary scorer and clutch shooter since he was drafted in 2004. Last season Gordon averaged 20.7 for the Bulls and 18.5 PPG in his Bulls career. The big question is can anyone currently on the Bulls roster fill the shooting void he leaves.
The Chicago Bulls will look to John Salmons to take over the load of Ben Gordon. Salmons came to the Bulls last year in a trade from the Sacramento Kings. Bulls fans quickly learned that he can shoot while he filled in at small forward for the injured Luol Deng. Now with Deng coming back and Gordon gone, Salmons will move over and start at shooting guard. John Salmons averaged 18.3 PPG as a Bull last year in 26 games. Thus, he is capable of starting and carrying the offensive load. Salmons is a late bloomer though and is only averaging 8.8 PPG throughout his seven year career. So there is some uncertainly if he is capable of handling the load for an entire season.
Backing-up John Salmons is former Chicago Bull Jannero Pargo returning for his second stint with the team. Pargo was a Bull for three years from the 2003-2004 season to the 2005-2006 season. He came off the bench those three years like he will again this time around. After he left the Bulls he went to the New Orleans Hornets and established himself as a very good shooting guard off the bench. Last season he went and played in Europe for more money than he was offered here. Now he is back in the NBA and with the Chicago Bulls. I like the Bulls bringing back Pargo and think he will do well in the role he will have. I remember Pargo with his first stint with the Bulls and watched him with the Hornets. He is a short guard like Gordon and has a similar game. I like both shooting guards the Bulls have in John Salmons and Jannero Pargo. Ben Gordon walks
NBA free agency started July 1st 2009. Ben Gordon left the Chicago Bulls for the Detroit Pistons. The Bulls kept saying they wanted to bring Ben Gordon back and were trying to resign him. Considering he agreed with the Pistons the first day he could, the Bulls never seemed in the running. I don’t know they said they wanted him back if they had no intention of actually bringing him back. The Bulls will either start John Salmons at shooting guard or start Kirk Hinrich. If Hinrich started then he would still be the primary back up point guard to Rose and Salmons would back up shooting guard and small forward. If Salmons started he would give us a bigger backcourt and then Hinrich would back up both guard spots. This is all a result of letting the former number three pick, Ben Gordon leave via free agency. Ben Gordon was a great shooter and an important part of the Bulls going as far as they did to 7 games against the Celtics in the playoffs this past season. The other players like Deng, Hinrich, Rose, Salmons and Tryus Thomas will have to step up their game for the offense were losing. The Bulls will not target any big names this offseason because they have less than 2 million dollars before they hit the luxury tax.
