GOI Fantasy Basketball League 2012 is back

Over the last three years GOI has had our Fantasy Basketball league. We had our draft a few weeks ago and were back for our fourth year with a few changes. We kept it an Auction League like last season, but changed it from a Rotisserie to a Head-to-Head. Channing the scoring format came with controversy in the league. We had some of the league members that wanted to make it Head-to-Head and others that wanted to keep it Rotisserie.  There is a big difference between the two. Finally after polling all of the members, many who have played in the league last year or longer we decided to change the scoring for the majority of the league.

With two weeks in the books I have to say I am not a big fan of Head-to-Head scoring for Fantasy basketball. I feel for some fantasy sports Head-to-Head is the only way to go such as Fantasy Football, but for other sports like Fantasy Baseball and Basketball (especially basketball) Rotisserie makes more sense. Like this season I like the team I drafted and talent on my roster, but not off to a good start because I have too many point guards on my roster with 6 and not enough big men. This was because all of the big men were going for too expensive after the cornerstone big men I bought to build my roster around.

Here is how my team turned out:

Here is the team TBO drafted:

Like every year TBO and myself have our rivalry for first. He is off to the early lead because I am in the basement while trying to figure out this new scoring format for basketball and making some trades for a better balanced team.  There will be periodic updates about the league.

Let us know what you think.

Preparing for Fantasy Basketball 2011-2012

Were over a month into the basketball season and I never posted anything about players I like for fantasy basketball this season. It’s too late to draft a team, but you can still try to trade for some of these players. I was hoping to post this before the draft, but December was a busy time at work, busy creating the GOI fantasy league, and many other reasons, including not wanting to give all of my fantasy basketball secrets to the other GOI authors and readers playing in our fantasy league. Now that I have some time I decided to post it anyways so you can see the players I was targeting at the beginning of the season.

I don't go in depth on every player and why I like them, but it's a number of things taken into account. Here are the main things I look at:
1) Where they are being drafted or bought in an auction league. Value is one the main things I look at and where you can get the best value, early and late in a draft.
2) Well rounded players that can help you in as many areas as possible. As we get down the list and more to late fliers they more get more one dimensional, but for the value and potential they are worth it.

These were players I was targeting in the pre-season and as you can see I was right on some, missed on others so far who may turn it around, and some are injured for the season.
Players you should or try to trade for:
1. Kevin Durant (OKC)- A MVP candidate and worth taking number one overall or buying in an auction league if you had the chance. This is an player you build a team around.
2. Russell Westbrook (OKC) – When it comes to PG he doesn’t have the health risk that Chris Paul seems to have or the bad FG % that Rajon Rondo has even though Rondo does so much else well. Westbrook is an elite PG you can build your team around.
3. Deron Williams (NJ)- Along with Westbrook, Williams can be a elite PG to build your team around. He has potential to take it to that next level and be a top 10 player, but always seems to disappoint in that regards. This year he has been asked to do too much and his FG% has been suffering, but helping your team in all of the other areas he always does if you have him.
4. Al Horford (ATL)- Out for the season which hurts me because I drafted him on all my teams. I was building my teams around Horford and expecting a big season.
5. LaMarcus Aldridge (POR)- Having a great season, and I would have rated him higher if it wasn’t for TBO pointing out his recently diagnosed heart condition to me which hasn’t effect him.
6. Blake Griffin (LAC)- I loved the value here because I was surprised he was being drafted as late as he was for how he finished last year.
7. Eric Gordon (LAC)- Shooting guard is very weak so I was very big season out of Eric Gordon. He is a very efficient scorer and going to be the best player on the team, but injuries have derailed his season.
8. David Lee (GS)- I was expecting a rebound season.
9. Rajon Rondo – A down year for the man who is always a leader in assist and steals.
10. Serge Ibaka (OKC)- He could be the best shot blocker in the league and I thought he would take it to that next level on offense, but with inconsistent minutes that hasn’t happened.
11. Brook Lopez (NJ)- He was my second round pick last year who majorly disappointed me. I loved the value for where he was falling this year, but with him missing so much time to injuries it is not good in this shortened season. If you can pick him up on waivers then you should do that ASAP.
12. Kevin Martin (HOU)- As I mentioned SG is very shallow and he is the second best option after Gordon, but turned out to be the safest.
13. Zach Randolph (MEM)- He has been my sleeper for the last few years because I was able to get him in the 4th or 5th round, but now he finally was getting recognition for being as good as he is. Another guy on my list hit by injuries.
14. Andre Iguodala (PHI)- He does a little of everything. After the marquee small forwards he is the best option.
15. Jrue Holiday (PHI)- I was big on him and Lowry, but was bigger on him when I was forced to choose. Rarely was I able to draft both of them and a marquee point guard. Only in my dreams!
16. Kyle Lowry (HOU)- He has been in the league for a few years, but looked like he was ready to break out this season given a chance and he did.
17. Greg Monroe (DET)- A young center who hasn’t disappointed. He is averaging a double double, and passes the ball well for a big man. He also helps is steals.
18. Marcin Gortat (PHO)- Also having a good season and block shots.
19. Channing Frye (PHO)- A disappointing season and is you can try to unload him if doesn’t look like he will rebound in the second half.
20. Mike Conley, Jr. (MEM)- He is having a strong season and helps in all the typical point guard categories.
21. Danilo Gallinari (DEN)- He just had an injury which will cost him a month, but he was having a monster season and a top 5 player before the injury. He started coming into his own this season as a elite efficient scorer.
22. Marc Gasol (MEM)- Right now he is the second best fantasy center. Besides for averaging a double double he passes well and blocks shots.
23. Tyreke Evans (SAC)- For where he was being drafted he is having a nice season, but he didn’t improve like I thought he could. It looks like what we see is what we get with Tyreke Evans.
24. Andrew Bogut (MIL)- Injuries seem to plague him every year which is why he was ranked as low as he was, and this year is no different. Before his injury this year, he was on pace for a big season carrying your team.
25. JaVale McGee (WAS)- A great value for where he was drafted. He will anchor your team is blocks and help in rebounds.
26. Andray Blatche (WAS)-Talk about bust. This is the last year I will ever be high on him. I am officially off the Andray Blatche bandwagon.
27. Ty Lawson (DEN)- A very good season in his second year.
28. Wesley Matthews (POR)- He reminded me as a cheap man’s version of Danilo Gallinari. Having a very good season.
29. Hedo Turkoglu (ORL)- After the few other small forwards I have on this list there aren’t many I like and he was being drafted very late so I liked the low risk.
30. Luis Scola (HOU)- Scola is always solid, but not this year.
31. Roy Hibbert (IND)- There was several centers I liked this year and Hibbert was one of them. He didn’t disappoint making the All star team.
32. Darren Collison (IND)- I drafted him last year over Westbrook and it didn’t work out. Towards the end of last season he seemed to learn his role on the team under his new coach so I liked him again this year.
33. Michael Beasley (MIN)
34. Jose Calderon (TOR)- I like Calderon every year if nothing else for the assist’s.
35. Anderson Varejao (CLE)- Every team need’s a go to need a go to man and I thought it could be Varejao having some help in rookie Kyle Irving. Varejao has been good, especially for the late pickup.
36. Paul George (IND)- I liked the potential of George as a scorer and slasher. He reminded me a lot of Luol Deng.
37. DeAndre Jordan (LAC)- He’s a one dimensional guy for block’s, but can be a difference maker.
38. Jeff Teague (ATL)- Hinrich’s injury opened the door and he took advantage. He shoot’s first which has been the knock on him, but he still averages almost 5 assist per game.
39. Samuel Dalembert - I thought he would just anchor your team in blocks, but surprisingly his resurgence occurred this season and he has helped your team in other areas.
40. Nick Young (WAS)
41. Evan Turner (PHI)

There will be more to come on Fantasy basketball this season.

GOI Fantasy Basketball league

I thought the NBA lockout was going to last the entire season and the entire NBA season was going to be canceled. TBO and myself actually made a bet on this if we would have a season. I said there would be no season, and TBO said I was crazy so we had a Wendy's board wager on the line. He won and I had to pay up. So the NBA season has been back since Christmas and with that means fantasy basketball.

This is the third year of GOI fantasy basketball league. We didn't create the league right away because of the lockout, so we waited until the lockout was over and then scrambled to have it ready for the season. I tell you folks, I don't know how the NBA did it with free agency, training camps, exhibition games, and everything else. It was hard enough to create a league when your busy with work, find people who will be competitive, a draft time that works for everyone, figure out all the settings, and most important make everyone in a 13 team league happy! I don't know if we accomplished that last goal, but GOI has a 13 team, live auction rotisserie league.

The third annual GOI fantasy basketball league drafted on December 19th. This year in addition to having TBO and myself in the league, Adam "Sexy Rexy" Kaplan joined for his first year of fantasy basketball. So we have three of the four GOI authors. We did try and convince David "MVP" Eckstein to play, but all of our attempts were unsuccessful this year. Hopefully next year he will join us. TBO won the league last year so he is looking to repeat. I won two years ago, but fell to third place last year so I am looking to rebound and take back first place. Adam is trying to prove he knows enough about basketball to compete with us. Like in previous years, I will post updates about the leagues a few times throughout the season.

As I mentioned earlier, this was a auction league with a $300 budget I raised from the default of $200. The rationale for raising it was so managers wouldn't run out of money so quickly at the end, and have some money to spend in such a deep to league to make it fun. Even though I understood the logic that if you raise the budget, it just inflates the players values, that is exactly what happened. It did inflate the players values throughout the draft, but those who did wait and save, did have enough to spend and were able to buy people later in the draft when people were going for much more than $1 players, which was my concern. The inflation rate was about 33%.

Adam's strategy was to get Chris Paul and build around him. In addition to Paul he got Stoudemire, and Curry for a good core nucleus of stud's. He obviously went with a stars and scrubs approach. Here is the team he drafted:

TBO drafted a stud guard in Dwyane Wade and a Stud big guy in Blake Griffin. He also drafted good role players with a lot of upside in Brook Lopez, Luol Deng, Andrew Bynum, James Harden, Paul George, Gerald Henderson, and Derrick Favors. Sadly for him, Lopez is now out 4-6 weeks and Bynum missed the first 5 games of the season. He has a good core though and good depth. Here is how his draft looks:

My Team, Cubsfan4evr had a different approach from the other 2 teams. I don't have any big superstars. I went for more of a well balanced team trying to collect assets. My studs are Al Horford, Steve Nash, and Kevin Martin. These studs aren't on the same caliber of Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Blake Griffin, and Amare Stoudemire, but I like my team. I have very good role players in Roy Hibbert, Gortat, Holiday, Turkoglu, Collison, Jennings, Blatche, and Frye. I have three players off to rough starts in Jennings, Blatche, and Frye, but if they pick it up by team will be unstoppable. Here is how my draft looks:

As you see I didn't spend all of my money, which I never seem to do in any auction..........but I am getting better with that.

GOI Fantasy Basketball League January Update

Every month we look at the GOI Fantasy Basketball League which TBO and myself are in. I am currently holding onto first place by 5 points, with TBO in third place. This past month I made a trade with TBO with me trading Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon for Andray Blatche, Darko Milicic, and Kevin Martin. I needed to improve in Blocks and rebounds which this trade helps me with, but it was before Griffin started getting hot so yes I did get rip off and regret the trade!

GOI Fantasy Basketball Team After 2 Months

We are two months into the basketball season so I figured we should look at how TBO and myself are doing in the GOI league. We both struggled early on in the first few weeks, but once the schedule evened out a bit, both of our teams contiunted to do better untill we moved towards the top. Currently I am in 1st with TBO in 3rd, but were pretty close point wise, especially this early in the season.

This is how were doing in each category:

As you see I am doing terrbile in BLK's, 3PTM, and FT%.

Earlier I did a post on how TBO and my team came out after the draft. This is how my roster currently looks:
Darren Collison is killing me in points, assists, and steals. I thought he would play liked he did last year when he filled in for the inured Chris Paul, but he has not settled into a groove yet in Indiana. Blake Griffin started out slow, but has been a double double guy of late. Andre Miller has saved me as my second point guard considering Collison has done nothing. I didn't expect much from Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter, and they still let me down.........................

Here is a look at TBO Team anchored by shooting:
As you see he has a lot of shooters, but some struggling ones in Tyreke Evans, Gilbert Arenas, Louis Williams, and Baron Davis (who I thought he hates!) all shooting below .400, ouch! That hurts!! Luckily he has Rose, Anthony, Howard, Martin, and Beasley to bring his FG% up.

If you play in the GOI Fantasy Basketball League and want to be included in future updates plese let us know.

What's the Deal with Fantasy Basketball?

It seems like every year fantasy sports keeps getting more popular. This is because there are more outlets to play fantasy sports on and they promote it more. Fantasy football has to be the most popular of all. I think this is because it’s the least time consuming sport to play. The games are only once a week so you only have to check your team once or twice to make moves and then set your lineups. Baseball is every day, but there seems to be many die hard baseball fans who want to play fantasy baseball. Basketball is a major sport, but I feel like Fantasy Basketball is a completely different story. I don’t have stats on how many people play Fantasy football, Fantasy Baseball, and Fantasy basketball every year, but the drop off to how many play fantasy basketball has to be big. I feel like not many people play fantasy basketball from doing Mock drafts, trying to find competitive managers for the GOI league, and the quality outlets to read and listen (podcasts) on Fantasy Basketball. These are the three reasons why I feel this way and it has been starting to bother me more and wonder why?

To prepare for this fantasy basketball season I wanted to practice in some mock drafts. As I started going into the Mock drafts I noticed more and more they were empty! Only if you went during the rush could you find a mock draft fill up with actual users and not the computer. TBO and myself tried to do a mock draft together and we had this problem. When I tired many times on my own I experienced this problem. I was surprised at the time to see this occur because I never saw anything like it for the hundreds and hundreds of fantasy football and fantasy baseball mock drafts I have done over the years.

Then I tried to find competitive players for this year’s GOI league. Last year we had a few managers who weren’t that competitive so we were trying to fix that problem this year. It was very hard to find people who were basketball fans that have played fantasy basketball before. Finally after a lot of work we found a good group of manager’s, but it was much harder than it should have been and harder than finding managers for other Fantasy Sports. Everyone I was asking who I knew was basketball fans said they didn’t want to because they never did it before; they don’t have time, or not good at it. This made me think it’s just too time consuming or to difficult compared to the other sports.

The last thing that me realize that fantasy basketball is further behind the other big sports in fantasy is the maturity level in coverage. There are hundreds of good fantasy sites for fantasy football and baseball with great coverage and analysis. You can go to ESPN, Yahoo, other sites, and blog’s and get great analysis. I don’t feel the same is true with fantasy basketball. Many of the articles I read I don’t find as informative or ground breaking as I learn in other sports. There are many podcast’s you can listen to for other fantasy sports, not for basketball. ESPN started a fantasy podcast on basketball this year. How could they not have one before? This podcast is one day a week!!! You can’t cover a sport properly with one day a week. This podcast is growing on me, and they make some good points, but it isn’t great. It is the best fantasy basketball podcast fix I can find though.

My first two points dealt with the lack of popularity people that play it. This point shows that the media and sports giants don’t even value fantasy basketball as much. This could go hand in hand with it not being as popular, but either way fantasy basketball needs to develop to the same level as fantasy football and baseball.

Do you agree with me that fantasy basketball feels much different than the other two major fantasy sports?

Meet the GOI Fantasy Basketball League 2010-2001 Season

Were in the middle of December and haven't talked about this year's Game Of Inches Fantasy basketball League for the 2010-2011 season. This is the 2nd annual GOI Fantasy Basketball league, which drafted almost two months ago at the end of October a week before the 2010 Basketball season started. Like last year, TBO and myself are the only two Contributors from GOI that wanted to play in a competitive fantasy basketball season. Both of us really get into the basketball season and Fantasy basketball. Don't get my off on the tangent on why fantasy basketball isn't that popular and not many good outlets on it. For this reason I am going to try and convince TBO to do a all fantasy basketball podcast soon.

Back to the the GOI Fantasy Basketball league. It is a 10 team Rotisserie league with 10 starting spots and 5 bench spots. It sounds like a shallow league with 10 teams, but with all the roster and bench spots the players become pretty scarce on the Free agent market. You can argue that many of those players can hurt your team because they are so one dimensional. The Players Stat Categories are: Field Goal Percentage (FG%), Free Throw Percentage (FT%), 3-point Shots Made (3PTM), Points Scored (PTS), Total Rebounds (REB), Assists (AST), Steals (ST), and Blocked Shots (BLK). Most notably we do not have Turnovers count. That is the one big difference between this league and Standard leagues.

Now to the point of this post, to talk about how the draft went in general, my team, and TBO team. I know we have some loyal GOI readers in the league. If you would like me to talk about your team in future GOI Fantasy Basketball League Updates please e-mail us or post in the comments section letting me know. In Fantasy Football we give a weekly update, but for football we will try to give monthly updates.

I had the 7th pick in the draft and TBO had the 8th pick. Then when we flipped back arround he picked in front of me by a pick. It was hard to have him so close to me because I was worried he may steal some players I wanted which he did with Andray Blatche. This was a Live Snake draft and we were on the phone together for the whole draft talking about the flow of it and which players we were targeting to some degree. TBO and myself have big strategy differences in Fantasy basketball and many players we have different opinions on. So we both knew the players the other's wouldn't take (me with Dwight Howard).

With Fantasy Baseball and Football I can tell confidently tell you what players I would want to take with my first pick. I think I can find the safe solid picks with your early picks. In basketball it isn't that clear to me. If I had the first pick I would like Kevin Durant, but I see risk with Chris Paul, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, Danny Granger, Pau Gasol, and Amar'e Stoudemire. Obviously I am doing this post draft summary two months late so my concerns about Pau Gasol, and Amar'e Stoudemire not being good 1st or 2nd round picks is obviously wrong by their strong play so far. I saw Gasol, Granger, and Wade as injury concern. The rest I could see just underperforming the justification for a top pick. There were many middle round guys I liked a lot, many as you will see I didn't get.
About Cubsfan4evr1 and TBO Picks

With my first round pick (7th overall) it was a no brainer for me to take Deron Williams. Stephen Curry went the pick before or I would have taken him. TBO drafted Dwight Howard 8th overall. I didn't even think of taking Howard because of the terrible FT% and sporadic point totals in the past. The other guys I liked I was hoping would fall back to me with my second pick. There aren't many Small forwards I am a big fan of, and one of them was Carmelo Anthony who TBO took right before me with his second pick. Anthony can obviously help in PTS, FG%, FT%, and 3pt so he is a solid all around shooter. With my second pick I took Brook Lopez. That way I have a point guard and center to anchor my team. I was hoping Lopez would be similar to Howard helping in all the categories finishing second to Howard in Blk's and rebounds with a better ft%, but that hasn't happened yet.

With my third pick and 27 overall pick I made a BIG mistake. I was hoping to add another PG or a center. Rajon Rondo went off the board 19th overall so then I was hoping for Al Horford who would be a good complement to Lopez, but he went right before me. So then with not much time I had to decide between Darren Collison and Russell Westbrook. I liked both a lot and was hoping I could get both with the other falling to my 4th pick only 4 picks away. I asked TBO and he said to take Collison and that was a big mistake. Collison barley plays, especially in the 4th quarter. He looks nothing like he did at the end of last season when he filled in for the injured Chris Paul and was great. Westbrook who did not fall back to me has been amazing. Considering how great Westbrook has been and the lack of much contributions from Collison who was a terrible 3rd round pick, my team would be so much better with Williams and Westbrook as my 2 point guards. If I don't win this league I will be kicking myself for that move, because I should have played it safe. TBO took Derrick Rose with his third round pick.

In the 4th round TBO took Tyreke Evans and I took Zach Randolph who I thought was a steal for the 4th round a double/double machine with good shooting percentages. In retrospect LaMarcus Aldridge who went 6th picks later and Marc Gasol who went 8 picks later might have been a better option. Both were on my list of players to target, but I had Randolph higher. I like Randolph, but both would have helped me better in Blk's and rebounds, a weakness of my team.

In the 5th round I needed a small forward so I took Stephen Jackson who does a little of everything and TBO got a stud shooter in Kevin Martin. Then TBO took Andray Blatche one pick before I was going to take him. I wanted some inside shooting, rebounds, and steals. So then I settled for Blake Griffin who has been underperforming so far. he helps in pts, rebounds, and assists, but not blocks, rebounds, or steals that I need from my centers. With my 7th round I was really hoping for Andrew Bogut, but he went 66th overall, so with my 67th pick scrambling I took Rashard Lewis. I passed up Paul Millsap. With my next pick I took Eric Gordon if I really needed some shooting and TBO surprised me with taking Chris Kaman who I thought he didn't like. My 9th pick was Andre Miller who has been amazing and has saved me because of Collison's bad play so far. Miller was supposed to be my 2nd point guard, but has played like I thought Collison would. TBO took Michael Beasley if he needed some big men. After that my final 5 picks have not been so hot.

Here was the team I drafted:

GOI Fantasy Basketball League Final Results

The 2010 basketball regular season is over and with that so is the Game Of Inches Fantasy basketball league. We have followed the league throughout the season so here are the final results:

TBO made an incredible run from starting out slow to finish in second place. He barely beat out the next team for that second place finish. Thank you everyone for playing and following the league!

Fantasy Basketball just got interesting

Despite the monumental comeback of epic proportions, I would concede the victory to Cubsfan if it meant the Bulls made the playoffs. Unfortunately, it looks like i'll just have to savior a fantasy championship till the Bulls get Wade/Lebron/Bosh/Boozer/Staudemire/Gay/Johnson for next year

GOI Fantasy Basketball League Update

Game of Inches has a fantasy basketball league that is coming down to the home stretch with only a month left of the regular season. I have been giving periodic updates throughout this season and have surprising news in this update for those who have been following the league. Two contributors from GOI, Cubsfan4evr1 and The ‘Bright’ One are in the league.

On November 17th, 2009 I gave the first update of the seasonafter a month. As you can see to start the season I was in first place with The 'Bright' One in 5th place. Here is how the point total looked:

1st Place) Cubsfan4evr- 86 Points
5th Place) The 'Bright' One- 54.5

As I said on November 17th “We all know that “The 'Bright' One” knows
basketball and Fantasy sports considering the great job he did with his fantasy
baseball team considering the injuries several of his key players had. Thus, we
will see his team improve over the season.”

On December 30th, 2009 I gave the second update for the league and the last one I reported on this blog. At the end of December I dropped to second place, but was only a few points out and still in competition for first place.

As I said then “The 'Bright' One is currently in 6th place, but usually does
make a push in the second half as we have learned from fantasy baseball and
fantasy football.” TBO always seems to start slow and make a run………………………………..

That takes us to today where I have regained first place for today, but not by much. I am in first place with 74 points. The team in second place has 72.5 points. The team in second place is TBO who has had an incredible run the past two months to go from sixth place to second place and threatening me for first place. He can easily win this league now, where a few months ago it looked like he would have a hard time even finishing in the top three!! As TBO said in his own words “this may be the greatest comeback in fantasy sports history” and he is defiantly right!

The top four teams are within four points of each other so any of those four teams have a chance to take the league. Look to the final update in about a month to see who wins! Me or The 'Bright' One dueling it out!

GOI Fantasy Basketball League Update

Every week throughout football season we gave an update of the GOI Fantasy Football League so here is an update of the GOI Fantasy Basketball team after two months.

After One month I was in first place. Now I Cubsfan4evr, have droped to second palce. The person in first place has 79 points and I have 78.5. It is very close and daily it seems the two of us in first and second place keep swapping places. At first glance my team doesn't look that good. I have no players in the top 25 for points scored. My team is also not doing well in free throw percentage and field goal percentage. The free throw percentage is a result of having many bg guys on my team who normally don't do as well in free throws. My team is very good at rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. lets hope I can get my way back into first. I feel that this will be a back and forth battle for the rest of the season.

The 'Bright' One is currently in 6th place, but usually does make a push in the second half as we have learned from fantasy baseball and fantasy football. We do have one team that has a team with star power with Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Joe Johnson, and on a lesser level Brandon Jennings, Eric Gordon, and Richard Hamilton who can all score. This team is only in 5th place, even with such a loaded roster because he doesn’t have a well balanced team which is what you need for fantasy sports.

We will see how the league shapes up over the course of the rest of the season.

Fantasy basketball anyone?

Basketball season is starting to heat up and that means fantasy basketball is starting.
