Derek Lee had a disappointing finish to the 2008 season last year becoming known for hitting into the double play. That was the first time he was hitting into the double play ball regularly because he was pulling the ball almost every time he made contact. He started this season picking up where he left off batting .189 for the month of March/April with one homerun, 10 RBI, and a .253 OBP. Things were not looking good. Then he finally came out of it hitting .313 in May and looking like the old Derek Lee. Derek Lee had a great season and a solid finish for the month of September winning Player of Month. Derek Lee was one of the few bright spots of this team this season.
